2007 Brag Paragraphs

The Panhellenic community would like to recognize its chapters for their excellence in the 2008-2009 academic year.

4-H
4-H House Cooperative Sorority had a very successful year. The year started with focus on our Philanthropy, Journey, where we raise money to purchase cameras for police cars to raise awareness of drunk driving. Each year, we host the “Etas Bake for You” in the fall and the Euchre Tournament in the spring, which raised a total of $540 this year to be put towards Journey. Last semester, we had a total of 260 service hours. Even while staying involved, we still achieved a grade point average of 3.34. In addition, Katie Knapp was named as an ACES Bronze Tablet recipient. In other news, we want to congratulate our House Mother, Carol DeVoss, on being honorable mention for Outstanding House Director at the Greek Oscars, as well as Danielle Swanson for second place as Greek Woman of the Year.

Alpha Chi Omega
The Alpha Chi Omega philanthropy, Women Against Domestic Violence, has become a main focus this past semester. This past year we have held clothing drives, food drives, and have spent time making dinner for the women at the Center of Women in Transition. Additionally, Camp Alpha Chi raised over $2,500 for this shelter. Last spring, we held our new paint balling philanthropy event and raised over $8,000. We had great participants from the other sororities and fraternities on campus, and we can not wait to hold our next event this semester. With the money we raised, we decorated a room at the Center for Women in Transition, and the extra money was donated to the shelter. We hope the upcoming semester will be just as successful!

Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Delta Pi was awarded first place for Outstanding Service in 2007. Alpha Delta Pi has participated in the most service events on campus while also donating the most hours of service to the community. Each member has logged about seven hours of service last semester. Alpha Delta Pi's annual philanthropy, the Pancake Dinner, raised over $5,000 for Ronald McDonald House. Alpha Delta Pi received second place in Excellence in External Operations while also receiving an award for Excellence in Fire and Life Safety. Several of Alpha Delta Pi's members received individual recognition within the Greek Community. Senior Brenda Lo was awarded the Beth Dohme Wallin award, which is given to a member who has shown leadership and great involvement in the Panhellenic Community.  Sophomore Hilary Phillips was awarded the Northwest Countryside Alumni Association Memorial Award, which is awarded to a member of the chapter who has showed commitment to Alpha Delta Pi.

On campus, the girls are involved in various clubs and activities, including tutoring local students at Vis a Vis, Best Buddies Organization, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Chicago Marathon, Relay for Life, and many more. With an average GPA of 3.386, Chi Omega is ranked 7th out of the 22 Panhellenic sororities. To top it all off, UIUC’s Omicron chapter was acknowledged for their bravery and conviction in upholding Chi Omega values by the National President at a national convention!

Delta Xi Phi
Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Inc. was established at the University of Illinois in 1994 by 15 women with the same ideals and beliefs. We pride ourselves in the five pillars that our organization was founded on: advancement of women through higher education, multicultural awareness, community service, friendship, and sisterhood. Our Alpha chapter is small but strong because all our members uphold these pillars.  Since we are small we are able to connect more with each other. We are proud to say that we have close relationships to our other chapters and know our sisters on a personal level, thereby upholding our pillars of sisterhood and friendship. Delta Xi Phi has been supporting the dreams of women for 13 years now and continues to do so as it grows and spreads quickly through more colleges in the U.S.

Delta Zeta
Delta Zeta’s Alpha Beta chapter has much to be proud for our accomplishments last semester. We began a new philanthropy called Turtle Sundae to benefit The Painted Turtle summer camp for terminally ill children. The event, a tug-of-war competition among other ice cream themed activities, raised $3,000 in its first year. The U of I chapter also won Delta Zeta’s Region XVI risk management award for 2006, as well as runner-up in the Greek Oscars for scholarship. We also had an Easter egg coloring event with Gamma Phi Beta. Our two sororities had a joint sisterhood event where we made Easter baskets for the elderly at a nursing home. We had a great time meeting new Greek women while giving back to the community.

Gamma Phi Beta
Gamma Phi Beta’s Omicron chapter continued to display their strong foundations in philanthropy, community service, scholarship and campus involvement last semester. The women of Gamma Phi hosted their annual Golf Tourney and Designer Jean Sale for one of the leading not-for-profit organizations, Camp Fire U.S.A. In addition, each member completed 2 hours of community service each month through tutoring at local schools, assisting at a crisis nursery, creating card packages for soldiers overseas and socializing with senior citizens. The women of Gamma Phi Beta also held an exceptional average GPA of 3.36. Internationally, the Omicron Chapter received the 2005-2006 Order of the Crescent Award recognizing the chapter for their excellence in recruitment, risk management, member education, finance and efficiency, and scholarship. Our University of Illinois chapter was one of only seventeen chapters recognized for this prestigious award.

Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Alpha Theta has strived to continue its excellence in a variety of aspects at the University of Illinois. This past year, we were very excited to welcome fifty-nine wonderful young women to our chapter. With their help, we were able to raise several thousand dollars in our annual philanthropy, Theta Hoops, benefiting CASA. Thetas joined Sigma Phi Epsilon to support the Joshua Gottheil Memorial Fund in our annual 5k Jog for Josh. The newest addition to our Chapter is a service project called “Theta Loves,” which strives to show appreciation for the many organizations on campus and in the community. This past semester, Thetas was honored to receive 1st Place Chapter Advisor Dee Dee Wright, 2nd Place Best Chapter, and 3rd Place Internal Operations. We were sad to see our wonderful seniors leave, but wish them the best of luck.

We are also very excited to present the students of Thomas Paine Elementary School with over 250 books that we have recently collected. Since the national philanthropy of Kappa Kappa Gamma is Reading is Fundamental, we know this will be a great way to promote reading to young students in the Urbana area! As we enter the fall semester, Kappas hope to continue their involvement on campus and look forward to seeing all of you at our “Kappatat” volleyball tournament October 13th and 14th!
Kappa Phi Lambda
Kappa Phi Lambda stands for Sisterhood, Service, and Cultural Diversity. Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. was established on March 9,1995 at Binghamton University by seven amazing women. With a dream of creating an organization that unites women of different nationalities and backgrounds, our founders also encourage the use of voice and thought in becoming leaders of society. Kappa Phi Lambda is an Asian-interest sorority, NOT Asian exclusive; women of all nationalities and backgrounds are welcome to learn about, actively speak for, and represent Pan-Asian culture. We engage in community service and also donate to a number of philanthropies. Although Kappa Phi Lambda is one of the youngest Greek organizations nationwide, it has successfully flourished throughout the East coast while gradually expanding into the West and has grown to be the largest Asian Interest sorority in the East Coast dedicated to Pan Asian culture. Our ultimate goal is to spread our vision and share our experiences with other women.
*Panhellenic Council is proud to welcome Kappa Phi Lambda as the Council’s 24th chapter.
Phi Mu
After Phi Mu’s very successful recruitment, many new, amazing women joined the sisterhood. Through hard work and dedication, $5,500 was raised for the Children’s Miracle Network via an annual Broomball tournament. In a further attempt to help, 1,500 service hours were completed, and a visit to the local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, St. John’s, in Springfield was made. For the chapter’s philanthropic efforts, Phi Mu received second place in the 2007 Greek Oscars for Outstanding Philanthropy and second place for Excellence in Internal Affairs. Last year, like every other, the ladies of Phi Mu made it their goal to keep true to the meaning, spirit, and reality of Phi Mu by representing themselves as noble women in all of their endeavors.
